Jewelry Boxes Women Love to Exhibit: Marquetry with Zebrawood
Handcrafted wooden boxes have always held a certain fascination for women, and are in much demand especially by those who love to collect trinkets. Zebrawood is used extensively in marquetry because of its extremely attractive color and diverse patterns. Marquetry is an art form that is used to adorn the lids of wooden jewelry boxes to enhance their external appearance. The veneer and burl of various types of rare wood are intricately inlaid to get evocative designs and patterns.
National Geographic constantly brings us beautiful images of herds of zebra running free in the wild, or peacefully grazing, or getting a drink of water at streams. Zebrawood, on the other hand, is a very rare find in the wild. Gabon, the Congo, and Cameroon in Central Africa are the few homesteads of this exotic wood. It gets its name from the resemblance it bears to the zebra with its beautiful dark stripes on a light background.
Zebrawood comes from the species Microberlina brazzavillensis and goes by several different names: African Zebrawood, Allenele, Amouk, and Zingana. The diameter of the tree ranges from 48” to 60” and mostly grows on banks of rivers.
Its heartwood reveals an extremely pale golden hue with thin very dark black and dark brown stripes. It has a very coarse texture and the pale color extends to the sapwood too. The wood resists preservative treatment so it easily succumbs to insects.
Although it is a very heavy hardwood, its grains are closely defined and interlocked making it a difficult wood to cut and carve. But it is an extremely beautiful and attractive wood with its exuberant patterns and colors especially when its quartersawn. It does not easily dry out and gives off a bit of a stench when it is being cut.
Extra care has to be taken when handling the Zebrawood veneer as it is quite fragile. But, it can be worked easily with hand and power tools. Using a belt sander will give a very smooth machine finish.
